The Italian region of Umbria is characterized by lush wooded hills, but is far less well-known with tourists than for instance Tuscany. That is surprising, because there is so much to be explored and discovered in this lovely region of central Italy. I – Margot – have selected a number of welcoming and comfortable agriturismos in Umbria. Every one of them has been personally visited by me. And selected for quality, atmosphere, and hospitality.

Welcome to the Green Heart of Italy

Umbria gained this title because it is situated between Tuscany, Lazio and Marche. The countryside is more rugged than that of Tuscany, and Umbria has no beaches. But you will not miss the coast or the beaches, because Umbria has all the ingredients for an unforgettable holiday.

For somewhere cool to escape to, go to Lake Trasimeno: the fourth largest lake in Italy. It is fringed with charming towns and villages and has three islands and several beaches. And Umbria is perfect for hiking and cycling if you do not mind hilly terrain. In springtime, this part of Italy is a colourful sea of wild flowers.

With over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year, Umbria’s climate is ideal for wine production. Wineries are abundant here, and most of them cater for visitors. Wine aficionados will appreciate the good wines that they produce, and these wines are also served with Umbria’s regional dishes. The region is famous for its black truffles, for instance, and Baci chocolates (meaning ‘kisses’ in Italian) from Perugia.

Cosy villages and towns

You will find lots of beautiful villages and historic walled towns to visit. Deruta for instance – the centre of Majolica stoneware – and Todi. Orvieto, seated high on a plateau of volcanic tufa, is a must see. Umbria’s capital, Perugia, boasts picturesque streets and alleys, and is a lively student and art town with a thriving nightlife.

Umbria’s most renowned cultural site is Assisi. The ‘San Francesco Basilica’ is famous for its frescos and tomb of Saint Francis. You will probably also enjoy the beautiful view from the hilltop on which this imposing basilica was built. Assisi’s pristinely preserved historical centre is definitely worth a visit. And let’s not forget the fantastic town of Montefalco, with its beautiful paintings and frescos.

The Città della Domenica in Perugia

This park of more than 45 hectares overlooks Perugia. From here you have one of the most beautiful panoramas of Umbria. The park is best described as an amusement park, an animal farm and a zoo all in one. Children can relive the most beautiful fairy tales, with Pinocchio's Village, Little Red Riding Hood's house, Sleeping Beauty's castle, the house of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and so on. There is also, for example, a reptile house, one of the largest in Europe. The farm animals - rabbits, goats, ponies - are easy to pet. You can explore the park on foot, but there is also a historic train that stops at the main attractions. The whole thing may look a bit simple, but we felt that is exactly its charm. Eating and drinking in Perugia

The day for residents of the center of Perugia begins with breakfast at Caffè Turan (Piazza IV Novembre, 35), so that's where you need to be. Good espresso, cappuccino and other coffees and a wide selection of brioche (croissants) and other sweets. The bar itself is also worthwhile because of the beautiful paintings on the ceiling. In the late afternoon and early evening, locals gather at the small Bar Dal Perugino (Piazza Matteotti 9) for an aperitivo. Or as usually, on the cozy terrace in front of the bar. For a good pizza, I can absolutely recommend Pizzeria La Mediterranea in Perugia. Located at Piazza Piccinino, 11, just slightly off the city's main square. Obviously pizza from the wood oven and a wide selection of local craft beers.

Trasimeno Lake

I am a big fan of the Italian lakes. Lake Trasimeno is therefore not to be missed as a tip. This is the fourth largest lake in Italy. You will find a number of beaches and cozy towns and villages. Such as Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno. Both villages are worth visiting. You can enjoy walking through the narrow streets. Castiglione del Lago is even one of the most beautiful villages of Italy and is on the list of Borghi piú belli d'Italia. For the most delicious lunch dishes, you should definitely visit the small bistro il Cantinone. The lunches, prepared with local products (cheese platter, cold cuts, soups, salads and sandwiches), are accompanied by local wines and craft beer. www.il-cantinone.it

For children, there are several fun playgrounds at the lake. At Castiglione del Lago there is a large lawn on the lake, ideal for a picnic, and a number of little beaches where you can relax. Lake Trasimeno has three islands: Isola Polvese, Isola Maggiore and Isola Minore. Isola Maggiore is the only inhabited island; here time has really stood still.
