A luxury agriturismo on Sicily

Sun, sea, intriguing cities and great food. Welcome to Sicily, Italy’s southernmost region. Are you looking for a luxury agriturismo in Sicily? I – Margot – have pre-selected them for you. I’ve personally visited every one of them. And they’ve been carefully selected for quality, atmosphere and hospitality. Whichever agriturismo you choose, it is bound to be a beautiful and characteristic accommodation. Benvenuto!

The map above shows all my agriturismos in Sicily. Since I only select the most beautiful ones, they are soon booked up! So don’t delay!

Sun, sea and beaches

Do you love the sun, sea and beach? There’s no place in Europe with more sun than Sicily. Lovely for a beach holiday. Here one can truly revel in beautiful sandy beaches and azure water. Sicily has amazing scenery and is of course known for its volcanos. Mount Etna, for instance, Europe’s largest active volcano. You can actually climb Etna with a guide. Another tourist site is the Valle dei Templi, near Agrigento. A Sicilian must-see.

Discovering and experiencing Sicily

Do you want to explore the island? There’s plenty to discover. Stunning routes lead to authentic inland villages. Splendid baroque towns such as Noto, Modica, Ragusa, Syracusa and Scicli will amaze you. They ooze history. Settle down on a terrace and relish the Sicilian cuisine. Cannoli e arancini, that’s a favourite of mine. And I’ve made it a habit to always buy sweet summer fruit and cherry tomatoes when in Sicily. Sun-ripened, what else? The southern hospitality makes you feel welcome and at home in Sicily.

What is an agriturismo?

An agriturismo is a farm that also offers accommodation for holidaymakers, rooms or apartments, usually.   They produce wine, olive oil, or sun-ripened vegetables. Sicily also has many citrus farms. You will stay in a renovated apartment, a luxury villa or a bed & breakfast. Within the countryside, surrounded by Sicily’s rich nature. Many of the agriturismos have a swimming pool, a restaurant (serving tasty local dishes), or both.

A child-friendly agriturismo on Sicily (WITH swimming pool!)

Are you holidaying with young children? Then a child-friendly agriturismo is a good choice. Here they can play by themselves, and discover. In the garden or in a swimming pool, and some of them have a children’s pool for the little ones. Some agriturismos have farm animals or a playground. Fun activities can be organized, such as pizza- and pasta making.

Ice cream at Nivera in Scicli

The picturesque town of Scicli is less well known than the larger and more touristic Noto e Modica, but well worth a visit as far as I am concerned. There is a relaxed and authentic atmosphere. Between the cozy squares and baroque buildings, you will find Gelateria Nivera. This gelateria is known for its artisan ice cream, made from fresh and local ingredients. The pistachio and almond flavors are absolute musts. After strolling through the picturesque streets of Scicli, enjoy your gelato on a bench in the shade of the historic buildings.

San Lorenzo beach

At a short drive from Noto, take the provincial road SP19 towards Pachino, is my favorite beach in this part of Sicily, San Lorenzo Beach. The crystal clear waters and fine golden sand are perfect for swimming and relaxing. There is a mix of free beach areas and well-maintained lidos with sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. The shallow water not only makes it beautifully turquoise in color, but also makes it ideal for children.

Fishing village of Marzamemi

Marzamemi is a charming fishing village, especially during sunset. At night, the square and surrounding streets turn into one huge, atmospheric terrace thanks to the many restaurants. An absolute must is a visit to Campisi, a family business famous for its traditional Sicilian delicacies. Their tuna products are still artisanally hand-cut and carefully selected. In the spacious store you will find a large assortment of local delicacies, also perfect as souvenirs. You can also enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner on their cozy terrace.

Lunch/dinner tip in Noto

In the heart of Noto, near the beautiful baroque cathedral, you will find Sabbinirica. For me, this is always a regular stop on the island. This atmospheric trattoria gives a modern twist to traditional Sicilian dishes, prepared with local ingredients and great attention to detail. In addition to flavorful sandwiches, they serve salads and rich platters of various cheeses and cold cuts. I like to go there in the late afternoon for “apericena,” which means having drinks (aperitif) and fingerfood at the same time. The eatery is also popular with locals, so you might need some patience to get a table.
