A luxurious agriturismo in the Italian Lakes

Do you want to enjoy the vibrancy of the Italian lakes but also spend time in a peaceful environment in comfort and even luxury? Then choose one of our luxury agriturismos on Lake Como or Lake Garda. Both lakes lie in the foothills of the Alps. Every one of these properties has been visited by me and carefully selected for quality, atmosphere and hospitality.

The map above shows all my agriturismos in the Lakes. Because I have only selected the loveliest agriturismos, they quickly get snapped up. So hurry!

Margot's favorites in Lake Como and Lake Garda

Discover the Italian lakes

Northern Italy’s landscape is characterized by lakes and mountains. A special region, that you must really visit at least once. Choose charming Lake Como or sparkling Lake Garda:

Cosy Lake Como

I am used to spending a large part of the summer on Lake Como. I am in good company, because George Clooney likes to stay there too. It’s also a great place for windsurfing, sailing, or supping (standup paddle boarding). Rent a boat or go on a cruise. On the northern shore of the lake you find many pebble beaches. Smiling villages are scattered around the lake. Hiking or mountain biking is great here. And then there are such local dishes as Sciatt (cheese-filled buckwheat fritters), or the undiscovered tasty wines from the Valtellina valley. Como town is well worth a visit, and of course you should take a boat to Bellagio! Fashion hub Milan is only 90 car minutes away.

Invigorating Lake Garda

Lake Garda is lively and touristy in a nice way. A Mecca for windsurfers, kite surfers and sailors. Lake Garda is beautifully set off by the Alps in the north. A favourite place of many climbers. It is also an ideal region for hiking and mountain biking. The southern shore of the lake is dotted with welcoming villages and lively lakeside promenades. The fun theme park Gardaland can be found there too. Verona should of course not be missed. And just 15 minutes drive from the lake you can revel in the tranquillity of the countryside.

An agriturismo in the quiet hinterland

Or maybe you’d like to experience the liveliness of Lake Como or Lake Garda, and yet have a relaxing base in the hinterland? Then an agriturismo near Lake Como or Lake Garda is ideal. Most of the properties are set in a quiet rural location. And yet the water, beaches and villages are nearby. The proprietor of the agriturismo will gladly point out the places of interest for you to visit.

A child-friendly agriturismo (WITH swimming pool!)

Are you bringing your children? They too want to have a great vacation. I have therefore made it very easy to book a child-friendly agriturismo. A lovely fun place for discovery and play. A child-friendly agriturismo often has a playground and a swimming pool, and sometimes a children’s pool for the little ones.  Your kid loves animals? Some of the agriturismos have livestock too.

Book your agriturismo in the Lakes

On the map above, you can easily select and book your favourite agriturismo near Lake Como or Lake Garda. Some agriturismos have a restaurant. Here you can enjoy local dishes, often created with ingredients from the farm’s own produce. We also have special child-friendly agriturismos. Still prefer the sea? Then have a look at my agriturismos in Tuscany or my agriturismos in Sicily.

The waterfalls of Domaso

A well-hidden attraction that is not easily accessible (so not suitable for small children). You only get to the waterfalls of Domaso by clambering over the rocks of the river Livo. A pair of water shoes is essential. You start at the old stone bridge over the river: the Ponte Vecchio. It's quite a scramble, with several waterfalls. The place for a unique selfie. The waterfalls are best known among local young people. They make daring jumps from 7 meters high into the azure blue water (jumping is dangerous and at your own risk).

Want to watch some videos of the falls? Search 'Cascate Domaso' on Youtube.

Rifugio San Jorio (m. 1965)

Every year in the summer, this hike is on my program. Especially because once at the top, at almost 2,000 meters, you can have a delicious meal in the Rifugio (mountain hut). From mid-June to mid-September, volunteers cook a delicious lunch every day. The perfect reward for a great hike!

Over the top of the mountain leads the border with Switzerland and there is a small church and a cross. By car you can drive from Dongo to the parking place at Rifugio il Giovo at 1,706 meters (the last few kilometers are unpaved). Then you walk along a well-maintained cart path to the top in just over an hour. From there you have a view not only of Lake Como, but on the other side also of Lake Maggiore and Monte Rosa. My children walked with me from an early age and it is a great activity for an athletic family. Definitely the high point (also literally) of your vacation on Lake Como!

Outdoor fun in Lake Como Adventure Park

For active outdoor fun, you can go to Lake Como Adventure Park. This is a large, adventure climbing park with courses for all ages. With the highest point at 18 meters, there is plenty of challenge for adults. Courses for the little ones are accessible from 3 years old. The website (www.lakecomoadventurepark.com) has more information about the park and courses.

During the summer months, our son works at the park as an instructor. So do you like to get the briefing in Dutch? Then ask at the ticket office for Luca. And are you afraid to go any further at the top of the tree? Then he comes climbing up to you to bring you back down.

Live the farm life at Lake Como

In the Valtellina Valley, 15 minutes by car from Lake Como, is La Fiorida. This farm has every day an open house. You can walk freely around the property and through the stables. There are cows, calves, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks and rabbits. You'll find a cheese dairy and a large deli with products from their own farm: meat(s), dairy products, jams, apple juice and more. I always walk out with bags full of stuff!

The best thing about the farm is the bar with covered terrace. Enjoy delicious sandwiches with cheese and cold cuts, a cheese board, local wines and fresh milk. I can also definitely recommend the homemade ice cream from their own milk.
