Beautifully situated in the mountains
Consider its breath-taking situation among the southern slopes of the Alps. From wherever you are around Lake Como, you will enjoy stunning views of the mountains. When sunbathing on the beach. Hiking through smiling villages. Swimming, surfing, or sailing on the water. Lake Como is smaller than Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda. Yet it has the longest coastline, stretching like a ribbon along gorges between the mountains. Its total length is 46 km, from the lake’s northern tip to the city of Como in the south. The road along the lake is one of the most panoramic in all Italy.
Authentic Italian villages
Lake Como is dotted with pretty villages with an authentic Italian atmosphere. Picturesque Bellagio, for instance, also known as the Pearl of the Lake. Its many luxurious hotels and villas often host celebrities. The city of Como has a beautiful historic centre and an old city wall. You will also find lots of appealing shops, bars and terraces. Tip: take the cable car from Como to the village of Burnate. You will be rewarded with splendid views of the lake and the city.
The eastern side of the lake is less touristy. Don’t miss the village of Varenna, with its colourful houses clinging to the rock. And also worth a visit is Menaggio, across the Lake. These two villages are conveniently linked to Bellagio by ferries. Gravedona is an idyllic village with a lively boulevard. Join the locals and indulge in a gelato at La Carapiña. In the mood for a shopping spree? Milan is close by, and can easily be reached by train.
Swimming, surfing and more
Lake Como is an ideal place for swimming, surfing, kiting, and water skiing. You can brush up your skills (or start from scratch) in one of the many sailing, surfing and water-skiing schools. They also rent out equipment. Prefer to relax? Take your pick of the many pebble beaches, where your children can play to their hearts content. Or make a boat-trip with a friendly crew, as nearly every village has a starting point for the many sightseeing boats that cruise the lake.
Hiking or mountain biking in the mountains
Love the mountains? Lake Como is the starting point of many spectacular hiking trails through the Alps. I can really recommend the trail through the Orrido di Bellano, a natural gorge between Taceno and Bellano. Or climb the highest mountain in the area: Monte Legnone (2609 m). There are also a few less-challenging trails for less experienced mountain hikers. On most routes you’ll find a rifugio (mountain hut) where you can order a drink and get a bite to eat.
The arrival of electric mountain bikes makes it possible for everyone to pedal through the mountains. E-bikes can be easily hired in practically every village. Here they can also advise you on which route to take, based on your wishes. With your fully charged battery, you can climb any mountain! The network of cycle routes is continually being expanded. There is for instance a beautiful route from Gera Lario, Lake Como, all the way to the charming mountain village of Chiavenna (about 30 kms).

The waterfalls of Domaso
A well-hidden attraction that is not easily accessible (so not suitable for small children). You only get to the waterfalls of Domaso by clambering over the rocks of the river Livo. A pair of water shoes is essential. You start at the old stone bridge over the river: the Ponte Vecchio. It's quite a scramble, with several waterfalls. The place for a unique selfie. The waterfalls are best known among local young people. They make daring jumps from 7 meters high into the azure blue water (jumping is dangerous and at your own risk).
Want to watch some videos of the falls? Search 'Cascate Domaso' on Youtube.
Rifugio San Jorio (m. 1965)
Every year in the summer, this hike is on my program. Especially because once at the top, at almost 2,000 meters, you can have a delicious meal in the Rifugio (mountain hut). From mid-June to mid-September, volunteers cook a delicious lunch every day. The perfect reward for a great hike!
Over the top of the mountain leads the border with Switzerland and there is a small church and a cross. By car you can drive from Dongo to the parking place at Rifugio il Giovo at 1,706 meters (the last few kilometers are unpaved). Then you walk along a well-maintained cart path to the top in just over an hour. From there you have a view not only of Lake Como, but on the other side also of Lake Maggiore and Monte Rosa. My children walked with me from an early age and it is a great activity for an athletic family. Definitely the high point (also literally) of your vacation on Lake Como!
Outdoor fun in Lake Como Adventure Park
For active outdoor fun, you can go to Lake Como Adventure Park. This is a large, adventure climbing park with courses for all ages. With the highest point at 18 meters, there is plenty of challenge for adults. Courses for the little ones are accessible from 3 years old. The website (www.lakecomoadventurepark.com) has more information about the park and courses.
During the summer months, our son works at the park as an instructor. So do you like to get the briefing in Dutch? Then ask at the ticket office for Luca. And are you afraid to go any further at the top of the tree? Then he comes climbing up to you to bring you back down.
Live the farm life at Lake Como
In the Valtellina Valley, 15 minutes by car from Lake Como, is La Fiorida. This farm has every day an open house. You can walk freely around the property and through the stables. There are cows, calves, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks and rabbits. You'll find a cheese dairy and a large deli with products from their own farm: meat(s), dairy products, jams, apple juice and more. I always walk out with bags full of stuff!
The best thing about the farm is the bar with covered terrace. Enjoy delicious sandwiches with cheese and cold cuts, a cheese board, local wines and fresh milk. I can also definitely recommend the homemade ice cream from their own milk.
