Agriturismo Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore is one of Italy’s most popular holiday destinations. Its wonderful climate is one of the reasons for that, and also its romantic scenery, and its lively towns. It has everything for a lovely holiday for two, or for a family. After a day of fun and discovery, it’s nice to return to your luxury accommodation and simply relax. I – Margot – have selected the prettiest agriturismos near Lake Maggiore.

Holidaying in a romantic atmosphere
A small part of Lake Maggiore lies in Switzerland, but most of it is in Italy. The lake is 60 km long and 10 km wide at its widest point. It is surrounded by the Alps. Early in the 18th century, this was a popular holiday destination with the European gentry. They would reside in luxurious hotels and mansions. The lake is still lined with stately villas with stunning botanical gardens. This all adds to the air of romance that lingers around Lake Maggiore.
Pristine beaches, clear water
Beautiful beaches are easy to find, when it’s time to relax. The lake boasts several bathing resorts with beaches. Many of them have sun loungers, parasols and play equipment for children. Most of the beaches are pebble, but here and there sand beaches have been made too. The lake water is clear. When there is no wind, you can see the fish darting by. The lake offers plenty of opportunity for water sports, such as surfing, paddle boarding, and sailing. You can also rent a motor boat (small boats can be hired without a sailing license).
Enchanting, lively villages to be discovered
Lake Maggiore is lined with several beautiful, charming villages. Verbania, for instance (with stunning villas, gardens and parks) and bustling, medieval Arona. These places also attract Milanese visitors who want to escape the heat of the city in the cooler lake region. Other beautiful villages are Caldè, Laveno, Baveno, Meina and Angera. Strolling in their main squares right beside the lake, you can mingle with the local population.
The little town of Stresa boasts a grandeur from times long past. It has a magnificent boulevard with several majestic hotels, like the Grand Hotel Des Iles Borromees.
From Stresa you can drive (via a toll road) up Monte Mottarone (1491 m). The view of the lakes and mountains is spectacular. Definitely worthwhile is a boat trip to the Borromean islands. On the island Isola Bella is a baroque-style palace surrounded by lush botanical gardens.
Tip: book a boat trip on the Lake Maggiore Express. You will travel by train to Locarno in Switzerland, and return by boat. An entire day to savour the lake and its surroundings.
